GOLF IS A SCIENCE !

As we know, golf is a sport. A kind of sport. That's all.
But for some persons, golf is not only a sport. It is a science !

(source : www.grouchygolf.com )

They called golf a a science for the reason to optimize the golf playing performance

There are many ways for people to treat golf as a science.
For example; The scientist observe the physical properties of golf ball.
So, we know a golf ball have dimples that avoid drag, as describe below;

From http://evenparround.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html, for detail explanation;
The dimples create turbulence, or mixed airflow, which, if done right, reduces drag.
Here's how it works:
There are two main types of airflow—laminar and turbulent. Laminar movement creates less drag but is vulnerable to "separation"—a phenomenon whereby the air layer that clings to the ball as it moves through the air separates from the ball. Turbulent flow creates more drag initially, but is less vulnerable to separation. At high speeds, like that of a flying golf ball, you want this air layer to cling to the ball as long as possible, and the added dimples do just that.
Another scientist interesting is the movement of ball

(source : www.chillidipgolf.co.uk )

By using TRACKMAN SYSTEM which apply Doppler radar technology, we could analyze the movement of ball. So, we can learn to control power and the movement of swing.

Golf is close with science, especially in Physic. http://www.drkochno.com/science_&_golf.htm, report the relation of physic science and golf as detail below and describe about velocity, momentum and muscle memory !
Golf has been studied on the basis of physics trying to determine how much power or energy is required. Power is defined by work done over a period of time. A physicist, Ted Jorgensen the author of The Physics of Golf, calculated that 32 pounds of muscle needs to be generated for a typical professional golfer’s swing to deliver two horsepower of energy. Calculating large and small muscle groups, he reasoned that the 32 pounds of muscle force cannot be exclusively generated by the arms and shoulders whereas he found that most of the power had to come from the legs, buttocks, back and abdomen.
The golf swing power is a fine-tuned control of muscle contraction and relaxation where a seamless transition from backswing to downswing maintaining the transfer of momentum from one muscle group to the next. This is an extremely difficult task to master and more so to encode in muscle memory.
The mechanics of the backswing and downswing prepare the golfer’s club to strike the ball at impact with the clubface square with the highest energy transfer or velocity. The dynamics of the collision are explained in terms of energy or momentum. Momentum is defined as mass times velocity. Optimal momentum and energy transfer come from proper linear and angular alignment.
Using the example of a boxer striking an object, they find that striking through the object to a point further in allows them to achieve the highest momentum and energy to accomplish their action. One reason amateur golfers have vastly different collision dynamics is that they may not have developed the skill to strike through the ball. At the moment the clubface strikes the ball, only a small fraction of energy is transferred to the ball as the club-head, after impact, decelerates from an average of 100 miles an hour to 90 miles an hour. This collision lasts approximately 0.0005 seconds, which is a very short time frame for transfer of energy and momentum.
Physics has always modeled the golf swing to a double pendulum or a two-lever action. One lever is formed by the shoulders, arms and wrists rotating in the upper chest. The second lever is the club rotating through the wrist cocked and un-cocked. Coordinating the timing of these two levers is one of the most difficult things to teach and learn.
The golfer’s downswing has been analyzed and has found that the action of the left arm is critical. The pull of the left arm provides the acceleration relative to the shoulder joint. The left arm should pull the golf club and body toward the ball. Then, as the left shoulder slows, the hips and legs push the body and club toward the ball. This combination of movements is usually quite unnatural and difficult to teach to the novice golfer.
The momentum achieved through the downswing provides an energy momentum transfer that generates a club-head velocity. This club-head velocity at impact is the key. Those golfers that have a well-timed fluid transfer of energy or momentum achieve the highest possible club-head velocity at impact. Tiger Woods describes his explosive swing focus on that his legs and hips drive forward, whereas, his upper body simply unwinds. He described this momentum transfer process in the framework that the lower body starts the whip action, the legs and hips drive forward delivering linear momentum, and the upper body unwinds delivering angular momentum.
Speed and acceleration are two separate and important concepts. Speed or velocity is a reference of distance over a period of time. Acceleration is a changing increasing speed, not constant. Acceleration is the key point of impact that allows for maximal ball strike.
The example for continued acceleration is demonstrated with Mark McGwire in baseball. He did not have the fastest bat speed, however he did have the greatest velocity immediately after the ball was hit. McGwire had continued acceleration with great muscle mass that resulted in more momentum being
transferred to the ball.

And the next is what is the science of putting golf ?
The answer is From http://www.puttomatic.com/puttingball.htm,

The Science of golf putting is a mechanical action which requires taking the correct aim, and executing or stroking the putt in a manner that can be repeated
again and again.
Mechanical failure of a golf putting stroke causes you to either "push" the golf putter off of the intended line to the right or "pull" the golf putter off of the intended line to the left. "Pushed" or "Pulled" putts create sidespin on the golf ball and cause the golf ball to travel in a non-straight putting line.
Of course, there are many research of golf science. Some of them discover tool or instrument for observe the result of swing or putting golf. Some scientist discover tool for improve the golfer performance. Some of them produce the simulator of golf and another found the game to increase the performance of golf playing.
Hmm.. many topics to tell about this.

THE CHEAPEST GOLF COURSE IN THE WORLD ?

Today topic is where is the cheapest golf course in the world
Maybe this is not a good topic, because there are many golfer no need the cheapest coarse. They need the convenient to play it, even they need pay more for enjoy the game.
But there are some golfer need the cheapest golf coarse to play. Especially for the beginner golfer, who need play more frequently to get more skill.
Some golf specialist give the suggest that they do not need to search the cheapest golf course. They need only to practice their golf swing or putting in indoor golf simulator or practice swing in driving range. After that you can play in real course two times per month. And that is enough.
But (of course ) there are some golfers prefer to play golf in the course. They feel the "different and unique sensation".

Let's we visit to New Zealand.
There is one place that offer cheap for green fee
One great small golf club to join is Tarras in Central Otago on the main road between Christchurch and Queenstown not far from Cromwell (the road runs through the middle of the course).
No clubhouse, just an honesty box to put your $10 green fees into. Greens have fences around them to keep the sheep off. If you hit a fence you get to replay the shot. White markers indicate where the fairway is because you get to place the ball on the fairway. Fairways have a bit of sheep dung on them. Fun course.
We have no affiliation to Tarras, we just heard about it. Yearly membership is $100nzd (as at 01 April 08).
To get a membership form just contact info@lindisriver.co.nz

HOW TO STRIKE THE BALL IN SAND BUNKER ?

Sometimes (or maybe often ? ) our ball landed in sand bunker.

It could make me disappointed and fed up.
Our emotion sometimes couldn't control well.

Watch out !

If your emotion could be controlled, you will loose some strike.
After some strike maybe the ball still keep stay in bunker.

( pict source : www.superstock.com )

Bad emotion makes our striking will be bad.
So, How to strike the ball in bunker and the ball go to green ?

The important to handle this is : keep calm; control the emotion.
This action make our energy will focus to our strike.

After we have controlled our emotion, the next step is adjust the position of strike.

Firstly, You have to use Sand Wedge
Standing on sand :)
Some part of your leg should be buried in sand.
The purpose is to keep your standing stable.
After that, See in the front of You, how the steep of bunker.
Then, you can estimate the slope of your striking. 45 degree ? 60 degree ?
Make sure that the angle of strike is enough for ball to pass the bunker.
After that, you can use your 50 % - 60 % power of swing.
Be careful, the strike should "kick" the ball at the right position and be able to "lift" the ball for leaving the bunker.
Another consideration is about the ball position, how buried the ball in the sand.
This condition will be affect to your strike.
As a diagram, we can see our strike like picture below

(Pict source : www.my-first-golf-book-online.com )

It is not easy to strike the ball in sand bunker. So It need more practice to handle this.

Have a nice practice :)

LET'S IMPROVE OUR SWING TEMPO !

What is the first aspect that we should consider about our swing skill is

We have to know what is the quality of our swing

Yes! Of course

Because this is our reference to improve our swing quality.
If We do not know how level our swing, How we could know that we have improved our swing quality ?

For example, If we know our level quality is 5, so we have improve to 7 or 8.

And, How we can measure our swing level ? One of them is we have to know about our swing tempo.

One of this kind of tool is :

Swing Tempo Golf Training Aid

http://www.intheholegolf.com

The revolutionary new Swing Tempo is a tempo-training device that allows you to measure and retain your optimal tempo. There has
never been a training aid that allows you to store your own tempo settings and achieve consistent, repeatable results... that is until now!

So, then You knew your swing tempo level.
Swing tempo Level means that you knew the tempo of back swing, top swing and down swing.

So you be able to ensure your swing in the optimal tempo.

Back swing is the first time where you swing the club.

Top swing is the next step by pull your hand more behind

And the last, down swing is the tempo after you swing and strike the ball

This tool is very helpful for you to understand your swing tempo. And this is the basic knowledge to understand your quality.

After you are wearing this tool while playing frequently , you will be able to hear and you will be able to feel your swing.
And of course you can improve your swing tempo optimal.
At last (but not least) you have the optimal skill to control swing tempo. It is means your next job is to improve your power.

But before you will be training your power, you have to ensure that your feet position is in right position.

It is very useful tool. Good Idea... :)

Have a nice practice...

THE FIRST PLACE TO LEARN GOLF

What is the first place to learn golf ?
Is it necessary to learn golf in golf course ?

(Source from
www.mooreparkgolf.com.au.and www.epd.gov.hk )

Of course, there is one place to learn golf. Some people believe that learning in this place could increase skill and self confidence.

The place is Golf Driving Range. There are many range such like this. Include in your country. Usually, this place is more economically compare that course. And we can practice more focus (and once again ) compare with gof course. Especially for the beginner, we can practice how to perform a good swing.

We can start learning from how to place ball on tee. A hundred times, we will put the ball on the tee. A hundred times we try to swing the ball. What is the good position to swing the ball. Many expert believe that we have to ensure the swing position since the very first time playing. Because if we have been starting with wrong swing position until hundreds times, So it is more difficult to "repair" to the good position. The problem is because the habit have created.

Because of that, many expert remind all the beginner to understand the good position from the very first time. After we understand, let's try (just slowly) See your foot position. your right foot and your left foot. See your body in good standing. Your hand position. How you grip the club. direct of your eyes. Start to swing the club. Firstly or after more than ten times maybe you still have a difficult. But after that you will Accustomed with this position. be patient, It maybe need several months to be skilled. But it is only time problem. Just do it and enjoy it. So at least you will be a master in swing golf. Forget about the target or hole . Just try to direct the ball. The swing skill is more important , compare with accuracy ball to the hole.

After you feel great with your swing, you can learn to control the power for swing refer to the hole. Because the distance of your place until the hole is always almost the same, you can feel your power easily. At this moment, you will be able to increase your accuracy skill.
But, the important is how to build your good swing position. Thats all.

Watch out with your back !
The problem is, because we always put the ball on the tee, maybe make our body should bend down hundred times. So back ache maybe happened on you.
To solve this problem is : do not bend down your body frequently while put ball on the tee with your hand. Don't use your hand !
Using your golf club and your shoes to set the ball on tee. By clip the ball with your shoes and your club.
That is the simple way to ovoid your back "working hard"

WHAT IS THE FAMOUS GOLF COURSE IN THE WORLD ?

All of golfer must be want to know, what is the most famous golf course in the world, and have a willing to go there.

From the golf-club.org.uk, we can found some place of this. This web choose six golf courses. three from USA, one from Scotland and two from england.
How they decide to choose them, did not explained. The explanation is only how the unique and the beautiful of them.
Web should explain that the courses have the most golfer playing there by write the number of golfer.

But of course, that places is have unique and beautiful nature.

Here is the detail

Augusta National

» Augusta, Georgia, USA
» Opened: 1933
» Yardage: 6 925
» Par: 72

Not many people could tell you what the first nine holes look like. But from the 10th onwards Augusta National is by far the world's best known course. Every hole on the last nine has become etched on the retinas of keen golf followers.

Pebble Beach

» Monterey Peninsula, California, USA
» Opened: 1919
» Yardage: 6 799
» Par: 72

Most great golf courses have been designed by acknowledged great architects. But there are exceptions. Pebble beach was also an amateur creation, but came from the creativity of one man, Jack Neville. In the later years, Neville said: "The golf course was there all the time. All I did was find the holes."

Oakmont

» Oakmont, Pennsylvania, USA
» Opened: 1904
» Yardage: 6 921
» Par: 71

Oakmont, on the outskirts of Pittsburg, is arguably the most penal lay-out in America, with hard, slick greens, bunkers everywhere, narrow fairways with thick rough, and a length of almost 7 000 yards.

St Andrews, Old Course

» St Andrews, Fife, Scotland
» Opened: Unknown
» Yardage: 6 933
» Par: 72

This is one of the world's oldest and most revered golf courses and is deservedly know as "the home of golf". It is a favorite course of many top professionals and amateurs, perhaps because it is by no means fearsome in still air but always demands good strategy and shot-making, though some of the first ten holes are easy in the extreme.

Sunningdale

» Sunningdale, Surrey, England
» Opened: 1902
» Yardage: 6 566
» Par: 72

Sunningdale, like its neighbour Wentworth, is a gorgeous course on the Surrey sand belt. Originally three farms surrounded by heather, gorse and pine trees, the land was owned by St John's College, Cambridge, who around the turn of the century were persuaded that the land should be turned into a golf course.

Wentworth

» Virginia Water, Surrey, England
» Opened: 1924
» Yardage: 6 945
» Par: 72

In the days after the First World War, developer Walter George Tarrant, who realized potential for such facilities, and had gained considerable success in producing quality housing around a golf course at st Georges Hill in Surrey, was looking for a similar site to repeat the exercise.

WHERE YOU CAN LEARN GOLF ON LINE ?

If you want to learn golf by yourself, there are many web you can found. Some of them are free. Even free, this web is still OK for learn. especially for the beginner.

Here for examples that we can learn.
